Chunky Blue Cheese Dressing
Chunky Blue Cheese Dressing is everything you expect from a really good, homemade blue cheese dressing. Blue cheese is blended with buttermilk, mayonnaise and flavors, then extra blue cheese crumbles are mixed in for that chunkiness we love.

Is there anything more disappointing than a watery, flavorless store-bought blue cheese dressing? We’ve all had it, and I’m here to change that. I want the best blue cheese dressing—and it has to include visible blue cheese chunks. Are you with me? If it’s homemade, you can control how you like it.
This recipe has been a classic around here since 2018 and still going strong.

Blue Cheese Dressing Ingredients
- Crumbled blue cheese
- Buttermilk
- Mayonnaise
- White wine vinegar
- Worcestershire sauce
- Black pepper
- Salt
Garlic in Blue Cheese Dressing
I don’t add garlic because, when raw, it overpowers the flavor of the blue cheese.
Sour Cream vs Mayonnaise
I prefer good mayonnaise because it already has built-in flavor, but you can substitute sour cream if you like.

Maximum Blue Cheese Flavor
I mentioned my secret above: simply blend some of the blue cheese with the other ingredients, then stir in the blue cheese crumbles.
Blue Cheese Dressing made in a Food Processor, Blender or by Hand
For ease, I like to make the dressing in a food processor or blender to keep it smooth and creamy—then I pour it into a bowl and stir in the crumbles. You can also mash the blue cheese by hand and then add the crumbles.
Use Good Quality Blue Cheese
Good quality blue cheese is the difference is good and not-so-good dressing. You can either use pre-crumbled blue cheese or buy a wedge and crumble it yourself. Just ensure it’s high-quality and tastes great, or your dressing won’t taste as good.
Different types of Blue Cheese
Blue cheese refers to all cheeses made with Penicillium cultures, which create those iconic blue veins and bold, tangy flavor. Any type will work for the dressing; it’s just a matter of personal flavor preference. Here are the most popular types:
Maytag Blue 🇺🇸 (USA)
- Texture: Dense and crumbly
- Flavor: Clean, tangy, slightly spicy
- Milk: Cow’s milk
Stilton 🇬🇧 (England)
- Texture: Crumbly but creamy
- Flavor: Rich, nutty, slightly tangy
- Milk: Cow’s milk
Danish Blue 🇩🇰 (Danablu)
- Texture: Semi-soft and creamy
- Flavor: Salty, sharp, slightly bitter
- Milk: Cow’s milk
Gorgonzola 🇮🇹 (Italy)
- Texture: Ranges from soft and creamy (Dolce) to firm and crumbly (Piccante)
- Flavor: Milder, buttery, earthy
- Milk: Cow’s milk
Roquefort 🇫🇷 (France)
- Texture: Creamy, crumbly
- Flavor: Sharp, tangy, salty
- Milk: Sheep’s milk

Uses for Blue Cheese Dressing

This chunky blue cheese dressing isn’t just for salads—use it as a dip too! I love dipping celery, cherry tomatoes, and just about any veggie in it. Buffalo sauce and blue cheese make the perfect match, so I like to dip my Buffalo Chicken Rosemary Skewers in the dressing to cool off the heat— and everyone loves dipping Chicken Wings. I even serve it with Buffalo Sauce Burgers with Blue Cheese Celery Slaw.

I am a blue cheese finatic. And when I found out I could make blue cheese at home, I looked for the chunkiest sauce and it was delivered. I absolutely love this dish… I mean sauce. 🙂
I’m so happy you found my recipe and love it. Thank you for the feedback 🙂
I wonder if I could use almond milk instead of buttermilk I have difficulty with dairy.
There is dairy in the blue cheese, so keep this in mind. You could use unsweetened unflavored almond milk or any other dairy free milk that has no flavor. I hope this helps and enjoy the dressing. Let me know if you have any more questions.
This recipe is by far the Best ever. I worked at a Italian Restaurant for several years and several times a week had to make dressings. I ate the blue cheese on everything( garlic rolls, french fries sometimes just off the spoon). And I can honestly say that is what I missed most when I left. This is it, tastes exactly the same. I do add 1/4 tsp. garlic powder as well for my own personal taste.
This is wonderful for me to hear, thank you for sharing.
Hands down, the best blue cheese dressing recipe ever, and trust me, I’ve made several different versions over the years. Thank you for not including sour cream in this recipe! I think it masks the wonderful flavors of the blue cheese. I did leave out the Worcestershire the second time, as hubby didn’t care for it, and cut back the vinegar to a tsp. Other than that, followed the recipe. This is my go to recipe for blue cheese dressing now!
Thank you for the great feedback, so glad you enjoy it.
