Recipe Request!

So for xmas I am giving my friends some of the stuff I canned during the summer, and I also want to make them some sweet treats to go with it!

I’ve been looking through recipe books, magazines and my fave foodie blogs but haven’t found anything that meets my requirements.

Basically I am looking for something inspired, that is not too difficult to make, is cheap (no hazelnuts or almonds, etc!) and is impressive.

Something other than the ordinary cookie.

I am currently considering a sweet party-mix type recipe, and also some form of candy, like sponge toffee. I’m not totally sold on the candy though because it seems like a lot of work and has the potential to go horribly wrong. I also don’t have anything to make a double boiler with, though I DO have a candy thermometer (which I have never used!)

I know some of you readers are awesome goody bakers, and I was hoping you could offer some suggestions or recipes? I need to make enough for 6-10 people. What is your fave treat to make?
Can you help me out?

Thanks!

  1. I love giving food gifts. People really appreciated home-made things, I think. I made this stuff called White Trash Mix (originally an Alton Brown recipe, but he doesn't have his blog up anymore. But you can Google it), Spiced Nuts – different recipes, hot cocoa mix, mulling spice packets. This year, I'm thinking of doing quick breads and/or biscotti.

  2. You can make white chocolate-candy cane bark=easiest recipe ever. Just melt white chocolate chips and add a drop or two of peppermint extract. Spread it over a cookie sheet and sprinkle with crushed-up candy canes. Let it cool and harden in the fridge and break it into pieces. So easy ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. We're doing an all homemade Christmas this year because we can't afford anything else (ahh, being a first time homeowner, hehe). Here's what's on my list:

    -Peppermint Patties (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Pepp
    -Pepernoten (a Dutch cookie http://www.recipezaar.com/Dutch-Pepernoten-195547

    and non edible:

-Paperwhites (gotta start 'em this week or they won't bloom in time for Christmas http://mayamade.blogspot.com/2008/11/simple-gifts

Hope this helps! Remember you can adjust recipe measurements to fit your needs (halve, quarter, etc). Keep us posted!!!

  4. I am making ginger crinkles, chocolate fudge, chocolate chip cookies (I add toffee, multi-chips, and sometimes macademia nuts), sugar cookies, probably peanut butter cookies.

Last year I also did butter tarts, but I think I might do pumpkin tarts instead this year. Oh I also did chocolate cake balls last year, but I think I'm going to skip that one this year.

If you want to look at some excellent recipes, if I don't have a recipe, I'll often browse the "joyofbaking.com", or check out what Bakerella has done (bakerella.com) and see if anything strikes my fancy.

I also got this link about making "Hershey kiss bouquets", and I might give that a try: http://www.ehow.com/how_2245503_ribbon-hershey-ki

    Have a cookie making party!
