So I’m currently enjoying some Haagen Dazs mint chocolate chip ice cream and I’ve come to a few conclusions:
1. I’m pretty sure the makers of this frozen delight expect you to eat the whole tub in one sitting.
Why is this you say?
Well, I don’t eat it all in one sitting, it usually takes me about 4-5 to get through a tub. But one thing I noticed is that after you take the plastic seal off the top, the ice cream develops this weird shiny film on top. My other ice creams take a much longer amount of time to develop this film.
My theory is that this stuff just isn’t made to stay delicious for longer than a day. Therefore, you must eat it all, RIGHT NOW! muahahahahah!
2. Man, this shit is FATTENING!!!
Haagen Dazs comes in 500mL containers. The nutrition label says that 1/2 a cup is one serving, so you get 4 servings per tub.
One serving is 300 calories. Ok, it’s not too bad. A little extravagant for a snack perhaps, but do-able in moderation.
But again with the eating the whole tub. If you sit down with your gal pal and chow down on a whole tub of this stuff, you’re eating 1,200 calories (of pure deliciousness)
1,200 calories! That’s more than 2 Big Mac’s!
3. Haagen Dazs is expensive. My Loblaw’s sells it for almost $7 a pop.
Lucky for me I hit up the sale last week and got 3 tubs for $10! I was SOOOOO tempted to buy 6 tubs total, but then my better sense prevailed. Not only would I have spent TWENTY DOLLARS on overpriced, calorie-laden goo, but I would have run out of space in my freezer and had to eat a whole tub in one sitting.
So I just got 3 ๐
And now, now I am curious! How many of you have consumed the wonder that is overpriced ice cream with 1,200 calories (Either the Dazs or Ben & Jerry’s); eating the whole tub in one sitting???
Come on, spill it!

Love me some Ben and Jerry’s. I only get it when it goes on sale though. When it’s $3 or less a pint, I’m all over that! I also read on the internet that the ice cream doesn’t develop ice crystals on the top when you put a layer of plastic wrap underneath the lid. I’ve tried it a few times with varying levels of success.

ah… I better come out with it and confess. I’m too frugal for Haagen Daas or Ben & Jerry’s. ^_^; They usually go for $6.99 or something and at that price point, it’s way too high for me. When they go on sale though, then I think how I can get Breyer’s for $2 on sale. Heh.
Though I will admit, I’ve eaten it a few times… I’ve never eaten a whole pint. But there was a time, I drowned my sorrows in 3/4 of a pint that I shared with my best friend. I had a broken heart and Haagen Daas’ cookie dough did the trick.

I LOVE Ben and Jerry’s. It’s made me an ice cream snob. But it’s only $2.50 USD for a pint at our local grocery store, so much lower than your prices!
I tell myself it’s probably better for me than cheap ice cream (though neither is, you know, really good for me) because it has..er…less preservatives. and hormones. and stuff.
and that’s the story I’m sticking with, dammit!

I’m more of a Ben & Jerry’s kinda girl. They’re usually for about $4, so I definitely only get them when they’re on sale ($2.50-$3).
I surely can’t be the only girl that’s eaten a pint in one sitting….am I? [blushes] Oh boy…
(For the record, it’s only happened a few times. And only once in the last two years.)
If I buy a pint, I *always* eat the whole thing in one sitting. Few exceptions. I love the Sticky Toffee Pudding Haagen-Daas and the Oatmeal Cookie (and Karamel Sutra) Ben & Jerry’s. But I also love the fancy fro-yo, the gluten/dairy/sugar free stuff, and any kind of gelatto. You could say I’m a bit of an ice cream connoisseur, although I didn’t realize it until just now.
But yes. I always eat the whole pint. Sometimes it’s my dinner and sometimes it’s not. And I refuse to feel bad about it.
I love both Haagen Daas and Ben & Jerry’s… I do eat with a spoon (I never scoop it out) but usually have enough for 3-4 sittings.
A nice treat too is Starbucks ice cream, but I can’t find it in Canada ๐

Dear US friends: I AM JEALOUS.
Only $2.50 regular price for the Dazs & BJ?? Oh man. Here in Canada its ridiculously expensive $6-7-8 each and we probably don’t even get half of the flavours that you guys do.
Although we DO have BJ’s If I Had 1,000,000 Flavours, which is a limited edition concoction by our Canadian band The Barenaked Ladies. I don’t think it’s in the states, but I could be wrong.
That one is super delicious, too.
I’m liking my overpriced ice cream, but you know what my favourite actually is?
The $1.88 big box of Chapman’s Tiger Tail ice cream ๐ The only problem is that I can’t find it in stores anymore! *cries*
i get about 4 servings out of one tub.

Love both Haagen Dazs and B&J, but probably actually buy B&J more. Both usually about US $3 pint and goes on sale quite a bit. Starbucks ice cream is really good, too. I try to limit myself and eat a few bites and then put it back. I have been seeing tiny portion cup sizes of B&J in my supermarket though. That could really help with portion control!
My favourite is Birthday Party ice cream from the Superstore. It’s like $4 for a tub and sooo yummy…but on hold for the winter ๐

When I was younger, and working at a video store, Saturday’s were our “ice cream and pizza” night for dinner. There were only two of us, so we would take turns buying the ice cream and the pizza, and eat that for dinner. I worked from 3-11, and would get company until 10. It was only Saturday’s, and only if I was scheduled with a certain person.
We also raced those pull-back cars, played frisbee, danced, played “bouncy-ball”, and did homework when it wasn’t busy! I kind of wish I had that much fun with a “grown up” job!
I can’t eat the whole container though – I find it too rich. I can eat a DQ blizzard, but not a tub from Haagen Dazs (though my bf can… haha).
As for favourite flavours, I really liked the vanilla brownie caramel HD, when it used to be available, and the mint oreo B&J.
No Name (I think) used to have a vanilla-raspberry swirl ice cream that I loved when I was a kid, but I haven’t seen it in a long time.
Did you notice if your Loblaws has the PC Candy Cane with chocolate crackle yet? The one by my place is small and I have a feeling they haven’t stocked it yet, but when I lived at York, the superstore stocked it on November 1. Now that one I want!
Amy! What is this Birthday Party ice cream you speak of? I must know!
Is it similar to Laura Secord’s SuperKid? I love that one, too ๐
