My good friend MR told me today over some BBQ that she had just been laid off from the company I used to work at on Thursday. Way to start a long weekend, eh?
She’s not too upset and is looking at it as a chance to start over, but I really don’t think it’s fair. She supports her husband and young child on a single income, and now they don’t have anything but a small severance coming in.
Did I mention they’re up to their eyeballs in debt?
I wish there was some way I could help her… I would love to see her and her husband on Til Debt Do Us Part, but somehow I don’t think that would fly.
I hope I’m not next. It seems everyone around me is getting laid off these days.

This is the third instance this past week alone, that I've heard of someone being laid off due to the recession.
Somewhat frightening for sure.
Maybe casually mention how you saw this great TDDUP episode and how cool would it be to have GAIL VAZ OXLADE help you with your money?
Was reading an interesting article today – http://news.moneycentral.msn.com/provider/providerarticle.aspx?feed=AP&date=20090519&id=9915268 – states that the deteriorating labour markets could cause the depressed economy to last till 2013 or 2014. Yikes.
It freaks me out every day. On Fridays I literally breathe a sigh of relief at having survived another week. Miraculously, our agency seems to be doing pretty OK, no layoffs, just a freeze on raises until June or July (vs. January when we normally would’ve gotten them) but I still thank my lucky stars every day that I’ve got a job.
I’m starting to worry on Thursdays as well… I haven’t heard any whispers, but I’m totally out of the loop at work anyway. It’s a bad spot to be in.
My one saving grace is that I am the only person below Director level working on my Giant Client X account. If they got rid of me they’d really be screwed so I hope I’m safe.
But I’ve been bulking up my savings just in case, and have several contingency plans as well :S
