Have you heard the news? Apparently Telus and Bell are making a move to charge users for every incoming text they receive, whether it’s spam or not. These changes go into effect in August for both companies.

This doesn’t affect anyone that has an existing txt plan on their phones, but it still sucks balls for those who choose not to subscribe to a txt plan.

I mostly use my phone as a phone and nothing more. It wasn’t til recently I had a small txt package added on. I used to get spam txt messages and voicemails on my cell, and I was pretty pissed that I had to waste minutes picking up the voicemail when it was just an ad. Totally invasive.

That’s why when I got a chain email from my friend abou the matter, I decided to sign a petition contesting Bell & Telus on their ridiculous charges.

In Canada, we already pay loads more for mobile service compared to the US and Europe. It’s quite embarrassing considering we’re one of the most technologically advanced countries in other areas of communication (We’ve got fibre-optic cable laid across the country already. Pretty cool, huh?)

The good news is we can do something about it. It seems the NDP has set up the petition–hopefully if enough people sign it we can bully them down from their decision, much like we did with the iPhone pricing.
