Usually you take it off the heat when it’s thick and then it will thicken up even more as it cools. It won’t thicken if it’s not already thick when hot if that makes sense

Thank you so much for your helpful email, although my husband and daughter fixed the custard. My 11 year old daughter ended up finishing up the tart and it came out absolutely beautiful.
